Inequality is rising in Aotearoa and this is not limited to certain cities or regions; it is a nation wide problem. Many families cannot earn enough to survive on, and are locked out of home ownership or being able to afford a healthy, safe rental property. Under the National government, we have seen record levels of child poverty and the return of respiratory diseases which are rare in OECD countries. Too many homes are cold and damp, too many families and individuals are homeless, too many kids are going hungry and can’t learn. All this leads to a significant part of our community being unhappy and unhealthy. It’s time for real leadership by government in looking after our people.
As part of the Green Party, I will campaign for
- Housing New Zealand building more healthy state homes in more places, and adopting a more accessible eligibility criteria
- An investigation into a Universal Basic Income for all New Zealanders so that we can all meet our basic needs
- A living wage for all
- Promoting and subsidising healthy food, and providing healthy food in schools so no child has to learn on an empty stomach
- A free education for all New Zealanders that is actually free
